MUSIC: excerpt from Nino Rota: The Godfather Love Theme, performed by the Kurpfälzische Chamber Orchestra under Frank Zacher [Oehms Classics OC 785, Track 5] [under the following]

Hello and welcome to Compact Discoveries. I’m your guide, Fred Flaxman. Stay with me for the next hour and we’ll explore a new CD from Oehms Classics called “Cinema Concertante.” It features the Kurpfälzische Chamber Orchestra under Frank Zacher with pan flutist Ulrich Herkenhoff playing beautiful arrangements of film music by Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Henry Mancini and others.

MUSIC: Fades out

The first of these arrangements adapted especially for chamber orchestra that I’m going to play for you is taken from Elmer Bernstein’s score for The Age of Innocence, the 1993 Martin Scorsese film. In the film itself the cello was the main instrument. It was later recorded by Itzhak Perlman in a version for violin and orchestra. In this recording the pan flute takes the lead.

Music from The Age of Innocence, performed by the Kurpfälzische Chamber Orchestra under Frank Zacher with pan flutist Ulrich Herkenhoff.

Next, from the same recording with the same artists, let’s listen to the Nuovo Cinema Morricone Suite. It includes themes from Once Upon a Time in AMerica, the Mission, Sacco and Vanzetti, and the Professional. It begins with the theme to La Piovra / The Octopus, a TV series.

One more piece adapted from a Morricone film now: La Califfa. The original filmscore featured an oboe. This adaptation for chamber orchestra expands the score into a duet for oboe and pan pipes.

Next we turn to Nino Rota’s filmscore for the 1972 film, The Godfather. First the waltz theme; then the love theme.

MUSIC: Nino Rota: The Godfather Waltz, performed by the Kurpfälzische Chamber Orchestra under Frank Zacher [Oehms Classics OC 785, Track 5] [02:24]

MUSIC: Nino Rota: The Godfather Love Theme, performed by the Kurpfälzische Chamber Orchestra under Frank Zacher [Oehms Classics OC 785, Track 5] [02:52]

Two themes from Nino Rota’s filmscore for The Godfather. The Kurpfälzische Chamber Orchestra was under the baton of Frank Zacher on this Oehms Classic CD that I am featuring this hour called “Cinema Concertante.”

In the movie Ladies in Lavender actor Daniel Brühl portrays a ship-wrecked young man who is washed up on a Cornish beach and discovered to be an exceptionally talented violin virtuoso. The theme was composed by Nigel Hess, a great-nephew of the celebrated British pianist Myra Hess. It was recorded by Joshua Bell for the film’s original soundtrack. In this recording it is initially played by Ulrich Herkenhoff on the pan pipes.

Next, the Oscar-winning main theme to the 1994 Italian movie Il Postino / The Postman. It was written by Argentinian composer Luis Bacalov. The original filmscore featured the bandoneón, a kind of South-American concertina. In this recording it is heard as a duet between the pan pipes and the clarinet.
